Nonfarm Payrolls Disappoint, Futures Down

9:00am (EST)

The bears controlled much of Thursday’s session despite the bullishness in the air as they held resistance ahead of today’s important economic reports.

The Dow fell 47 points, or 0.4%, to finish at 12,896.  The blue-chips traded down to 12,852 shortly after the open before bouncing back to reach a peak of 12,961 (+18) in the afternoon.

The S&P 500 dropped a six-pack, or 0.5%, to settle at 1,367.  The index staggered its way down to 1,363 an hour into the session but rebounded to make a run back to even.  The S&P failed to make it into positive territory for the day as resistance at 1,375 held.

The Nasdaq was up less than a point and closed flat at 2,976.  Tech reached a low of 2,958 but quickly recovered before the other major indexes and was pushing green by lunchtime.  The Nasdaq made a high of 2,987 but still fell short of clearing the 3,000 level.

This morning’s Nonfarm Private Payrolls report was a big disappointment and came up short.

As we head to press, futures look like this:  Dow (-78), S&P 500 (-11), Nasdaq 100 (-14).
